Supply of leeks has improved in Poland

2021-04-14 11:32
The current season is very difficult for leeks across Europe. The vegetable has been scarce for a long time and the current supply remains lower than in more abundant years. So much so that the wholesale prices for leeks are now among the highest in recent years.

The low supply of domestic leeks in spring is the norm rather than an exception. But usually their prices do not rise so much "held in check" by import prices. This year, imports from Belgium, France and the Netherlands have also become more expensive. At the end of February, the average price of leeks imported from Western Europe rose to 7.00 zlotys per kilo in the larger wholesale trade.

Now Belgian or French leeks are slightly cheaper on average. Their wholesale selling prices are 4.00-7.50 zł/kg depending on packaging, calibre and quality. Polish leeks remain record-breaking expensive, with selling prices of 4.50-6.00 zł/kg, although this is still slightly cheaper on average than at the end of March (5.25 zł/kg now versus 5.75 zł/kg then).

These small price drops have been forced by an improved supply of leeks on the Polish market. This was possible thanks to the import of these vegetables from Turkey. In difficult times, Turkish leeks have often been an alternative to expensive Western European imports and this is still the case today, although they are perceived as lower in quality. All the more so as the Turkish offer is now very competitive in terms of price. Importers are offering Turkish leeks at 2.00-2.75 PLN/kg, which is almost 55 percent cheaper than Belgian leeks on average.
