Tomato imports to Poland in 2020 based on CSO data

The volume of tomatoes (CN category 070200) imported to Poland in 2020 amounted to 173.1 thousand tonnes, and its value to 1047.7 million PLN (1.0 billion PLN). This means an increase in imports in this category both in terms of the quantitative aspect and its value.

This is because in 2019, tomato imports amounted to 161.0 thousand tonnes and their value reached PLN 945.2 million. The volume thus increased by 12.1 thousand tonnes, or 7.5 per cent. The value of imports increased by PLN 102.5 million, i.e. by 10.8 per cent.

The average price of imported tomatoes in 2020 was PLN 6.05/kg compared to PLN 5.87/kg in the same period of 2019, a year-on-year increase of 3.1 per cent.

When it comes to changes in the structure of imports in this category between 2019 and 2020, first of all, there was a change in the leader, but apart from that, the changes in the top five suppliers were mainly quantitative.

The Netherlands moved up to first position from second by increasing the volume of deliveries from 42.9 to 53.5 thousand tonnes.

It has pushed Spain, from where tomato imports fell from 60.0 to 52.9 thousand tonnes, into second place.

Morocco remained in third place, increasing deliveries from 20.0 to 28.2 thousand tonnes.

Germany remained in fourth place with an increase in volume from 17.2 to 17.3 thousand tonnes.

Turkey remains in fifth place with an increase in volume from 9.5 to 11.0 thousand tonnes.

Imports from our neighbor Ukraine shrank from 1.4 to 0.8 thousand tonnes, causing this country to drop from ninth to tenth place in the ranking of tomato suppliers to Poland.

In terms of average prices for tomatoes imported to Poland in 2020 from the top five suppliers, the highest price was from Germany at 8.89 PLN/kg and the lowest from Turkey at 4.45 PLN/kg. Tomatoes from the largest supplier, the Netherlands, had an average price of 5.10 zł/kg, higher only than the Turkish.
