Very low buying prices of sour cherries in Poland

2021-08-09 11:17
This year's sour cherry buying season in Poland has been a disaster for producers of this fruit. Prices have remained low since the beginning and even if they have improved a little, it is not enough to change the negative picture of the season. And as it turned out today, the change was short-lived.

Here is a picture of fruit from the Warka area in Poland, where the Łutówka harvest is underway. Producers have to give such fruit for 1.60 PLN/kg, and from today it may even be cheaper, because some purchasers have reduced prices by 10 groszy. Prices of cherries for freezing are currently at 1.40-1.60 PLN/kg. Sour cherries for compote are at 1.70 PLN per kilo, but only in the morning, in the afternoon they will be cheaper. PW cherries are priced at 0.80-0.90 PLN/kg. "It's a disaster," say producers. "Buying prices are far below our costs." Indeed, experts estimate that the cost of production is around 2.20 PLN/kg.

Such low prices will undoubtedly have an impact on next season. Some cherry orchards will go under the axe again. Even more would go, but fruit growers point to the fact that times are such that no fruit crop can guarantee a stable income. In any case, the area of sour cherry orchards will decline. Will this be enough for purchase prices to rise above the profitability threshold next season? Will this not eventually lead to a situation where sour cherries will have to be imported to Poland?
