Watermelons imports to Poland in Q1 2021

The volume of watermelons imported to Poland (CN category 080711 - Fresh watermelons) amounted to 3.9 tonnes in the first quarter of 2021, while its value reached PLN 18.0 million. This means an increase in imports both in terms of quantity and value.

In the first quarter of 2020, imports in this category amounted to 3.8 thousand tonnes and PLN 14.0 million. This gives a year-on-year increase in volume by 111 tonnes, i.e. by 2.9 per cent, and a significant increase in value by PLN 3.9 million, i.e. by 28.1 per cent.

The average price of watermelons imported to Poland in the first quarter of 2021 was PLN 4.60/kg compared to PLN 3.69/kg in the same period of 2019, a year-on-year increase of 24.5 per cent.

There were only two major watermelon suppliers to Poland in the first quarter of 2020, with the Netherlands joining them a year later.

In first place was Brazil, from where imports fell from 1.8 to 1.4 thousand tonnes.

Costa Rica came second with a drop in volume from 1.2 to 1.0 thousand tonnes.

Imports from the Netherlands increased from 60 tonnes to 0.8 thousand tonnes.

The average price of Costa Rican watermelons was the highest among the three suppliers at 4.57 PLN/kg. Slightly cheaper were watermelons from Holland - 4.52 PLN/kg on average, and the cheapest were those from Brazil - 4.54 PLN/kg.
