Weather has supported the growth of cabbage prices in Poland

2021-02-10 12:30
The prices of white cabbage have been rising in the Polish wholesale market since January. But this growth was slow and with resistance. The growth was created primarily by synoptic conditions, and in a way against the demand realities on the domestic vegetable market.

The arrival of frosty and snowy weather has forced up prices, making logistics more difficult and therefore affecting the current supply of cabbage. Demand for this vegetable in the ongoing lockdown remains limited. This was evident as soon as winter let up for a while - there was an immediate correction in prices. However, the trend returned when it became cold again. This can be seen in our chart below.

As a consequence, the current selling prices of white cabbage at the large wholesaler's are between 0.45-0.80 PLN/kg, depending on the calibre, quality and packaging. There has also been greater geographical differentiation due to more difficult logistics. The average price is already 38 per cent higher than in mid-January this year. It is also 26 per cent higher year-on-year. But at the same time we can see on our chart that the curve of this average has not gone significantly out of the area, in which the cabbage prices were most often shaped in the previous years. There is still a long way to go from "above average" seasons like 2015/2016 not to mention 2018/2019 and 2010/2011.
