What prices for Golden Delicious apples in the Polish market ?

WAPA data (apple stocks on 1 April 2021) confirmed that March was a very good month for the apple trade, including the Golden variety. In the EU (plus Switzerland and the UK), stocks of the variety on 1 April were at 513,000 tonnes, a "run down" of 141,000 tonnes of Golden in March. A year earlier - 1.04.2020 stocks of this variety were 646 thousand tonnes.

In Poland, as of 1.04.2021, the stock of Golden Delicious apples was estimated at 60 thousand tonnes, 25 thousand tonnes less than a month earlier. A year ago, according to WAPA, Polish Golden Delicious stocks were also 60,000 tonnes, meaning that March was a breakthrough in the trade of this apple, as in previous months a year-on-year comparison showed higher stocks in the current season.

Unfortunately, according to market participants and experts, April did not bring a continuation of this welcome trend. Sales of apples generally sat down, including Golden. A major problem was the deterioration in quality. Much of the stock in the chambers is said to be de facto industrial apple. The cold spring was also not conducive to high demand for apples. This caused purchase prices for Golden Delicious to fall in April instead of rising, as can be seen in the graph below.

On the other hand, the frosts and generally continued cold weather meant that the old season was prolonged and there was less supply of early apples in the new season. In addition, the poor quality of much of the stock should translate into better prices for quality apples. If the weather finally improves, there should also be the demand that has been lacking in recent weeks. If so, prices should rise from the current range of 1.50-1.80 PLN (cal. 70+), even in May, but there will certainly be no record breaking year.
