Young potato prices are down on the Polish market, but...

2021-07-12 11:22
New potatoes are getting cheaper in Poland and this is nothing unusual in July. On the Polish wholesale market this is a typical phenomenon. The only question is: how fast are they falling, and what level have wholesale prices of these vegetables dropped to so far?

It's easy to answer these questions by analyzing the graph above, which illustrates the changes in the average price of new potatoes on the wholesale market in the current and previous ten seasons. This graph shows that the average price of early potatoes this season has actually been falling since the earliest stage of the season (with a brief upward bounce around 15 June). Since the end of May, the price has declined by 73 per cent.

However the graph also shows that despite this decrease, prices of new potatoes on the Polish wholesale market are not that low. Admittedly, they are not record high either, as they were more expensive in 2019. But during the third decade of June and at the beginning of July, the rate of price reduction slowed down significantly and, as a result, the average is above the level in eight of the previous ten years.

This is largely the result of difficult summer weather, including an agricultural drought.  The hot weather is not favourable for early potato varieties and there is not much stock on the market. It also seems that this will not change in the near future and prices will be above average for this phase of the season (of course we should also bear in mind the increase in production costs and generally higher inflation in recent months).
