Heat-Driven Glut Drives Down Polish Field Cucumber Prices in Early August
Field cucumber prices in Poland have dropped sharply due to a surge in supply caused by hot weather, with wholesale rates at Bronisze falling as low as €0.2/kg.
On the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, field cucumbers ('ogórki gruntowe') were quoted on 3 August 2026 at €0.2–0.9/kg (1–4 PLN/kg), reflecting a continued downward trend from last week, when the smallest grades were trading at €1.2–1.4/kg (5–6 PLN/kg). This price drop follows a period when prices had peaked at around €2.3/kg (10 PLN/kg). The decline is attributed to a significant increase in supply, as hot and sunny weather accelerated ripening and harvesting across major producing regions.
Greenhouse cucumbers ('ogórki spod osłon krótkie') at Bronisze were trading at €1.0–1.3/kg (4.5–5.5 PLN/kg) on 3 August, showing a slight increase compared to the previous week’s €1.0–1.2/kg (4.5–5 PLN/kg). At other wholesale markets, short cucumbers in Lublin (Elizówka) were available at €0.7–1.4/kg (3–6 PLN/kg), and in Łódź (Zjazdowa market) at €1.2–1.4/kg (5–6 PLN/kg). In Wrocław (Targpiast), field cucumbers were priced at €0.9–1.6/kg (4–7 PLN/kg), while the lowest price was observed at the Kalisz market, where field cucumbers were offered at €0.6/kg (2.5 PLN/kg).
Pickled cucumber products also showed robust pricing: at Bronisze, 'ogórki kwaszone' were offered at €2.6–2.8/kg (11–12 PLN/kg), and 'ogórki małosolne' at €2.6–3.3/kg (11–14 PLN/kg) on 3 August.
The sharp price drop and wide availability are directly linked to persistent high temperatures, which have not only sped up the field cucumber harvest but also increased the volume arriving at wholesale markets. This has led to a temporary oversupply and intensified competition among sellers.
Demand for fresh cucumbers remains stable, but the rapid influx of product and the resulting price pressure are influencing trading dynamics throughout the supply chain.
