Wide price gap for cucumbers at Bronisze as field supply rises
Cucumber prices in Poland show strong divergence, with field-grown types reaching up to €1.6/kg and greenhouse types dropping to €0.4/kg at Bronisze in early July 2026 amid increased supply and revived buyer demand.
At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, early July 2026 saw a significant price spread between cucumber types. Field-grown cucumbers (ogórki gruntowe), particularly the smallest grades, were sold at €1.2–1.6/kg (5–7 PLN/kg) on July 3, 2026. In contrast, greenhouse-grown, spiny cucumbers (ogórki brodawkowe spod osłon) saw prices as low as €0.4–0.7/kg (1.5–3 PLN/kg), with larger calibers fetching the lowest prices due to oversupply. Greenhouse smooth cucumbers from new plantings traded at about €0.8/kg (3.5 PLN/kg), while produce from older plantings often did not reach a stable price level.
Other wholesale markets reflected similar trends. At the Kalisz exchange, field cucumbers traded at €0.4–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg) and greenhouse cucumbers at around €0.5/kg (2 PLN/kg). In Łódź, prices ranged from €0.5 to €1.2/kg (2–5 PLN/kg), while in Poznań (Wielkopolska), both field and greenhouse cucumbers fetched €1.2–1.4/kg (25–30 PLN per 5 kg).
The increase in supply followed a period of extreme heat, which had previously limited harvests as field work became difficult. The subsequent cooling allowed growers to resume harvesting, resulting in greater market availability and more active trading. Buyer demand for fresh cucumbers, especially field-grown types, remained high at the start of the Polish open-field season, supporting elevated prices for the first harvests.
According to the Polish ARiMR registry, the cucumber cultivation area in 2026 rose to 5,438.6 hectares, up more than 430 hectares from 2025. The largest growing regions are Mazowieckie (1,564.9 ha), Świętokrzyskie (779.4 ha), Łódzkie (731.2 ha), and Wielkopolskie (631.6 ha), with additional significant production in Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Małopolskie.
Labour shortages for manual harvest and the need for irrigation remain key challenges for growers, especially as climatic variability increases the risk of disease during wet periods. Despite these difficulties, the area under cucumber cultivation expanded in 2026 after several years of decline.
