Apple exports from Poland 2021/2022 (August-February)

2022-04-21 11:02

According to the latest CSO data, Poland's apple exports in February 2022 are up on those in January this year. Cumulative exports in the 2021/2022 season also remain higher than in the previous two seasons. However, another negative trend was maintained, namely that exports in February 2022 (as in January, and in contrast to earlier months of the season) were lower than exports in February 2021 and 2020 - both in volume and in value terms. Details can be seen in the charts below.

The volume of apple exports in the period August 2021-February 2022 amounted to 508.7 thousand tonnes. In relation to the same period of the 2020/2021 season, this is an increase of 94.6 thousand tonnes, or 22.8 per cent. In relation to the 2019/2020 season, it is an increase of 77.8 thousand tons, or 18.1 percent.

As for the value of apples exported from Poland, it was PLN 855.7 million in the period under review. This value was higher than that of the corresponding period of the 2020/2021 season by PLN 95.0 million, i.e. by 12.5 per cent. On the other hand, compared to the 2019/2020 season, the increase amounted to PLN 56.3 million, or 7.0 per cent.

In the current season, the volume of Polish apple exports was higher than in the previous two years in each of the following five months: in August, September, October, November and December, as shown in the graph below. Only in January did these proportions change.

The upward trend in the current season, which continued until November, broke down in December and this negative dynamic continued in January and February, even though, as mentioned, the February volume was higher than the January volume. Similarly with value. In December the downward trend started and in January and February 2022 the value was lower than in the two previous years.

February 2022 exports were 13.6 per cent higher than January in volume terms and 13.5 per cent higher in value terms. However, these exports were lower than February 2021 exports by 16.4 per cent in volume terms and by 19.8 per cent in value terms. By contrast, it was 11.1 per cent lower by volume and 15.6 per cent lower by value than February 2020.

Unfortunately the average price of Polish apples exported in February did not maintain the upward trend of January. It fell month-on-month, although only by one penny per kilo, and amounted to 1.82 PLN/kg in February 2022. In relation to January 2022, this means a decrease of 0.1 per cent.

The February price was also lower than in the previous two years. Compared to February 2021, there was a fall of 0.08 zł/kg, or 4.5 per cent, while compared to February 2020, there was a fall of 0.10 PLN/kg, or 5.2 per cent.

Egypt remained the biggest buyer of Polish apples in February 2022. Preliminary data from the Central Statistical Office (CSO) indicate a volume of 16.5 thousand tonnes delivered to this African country in February. Germany came second with 6.6 thousand tonnes (dessert apples only 5.9 thousand tonnes), Romania third with 6.5 thousand tonnes and Kazakhstan fourth with 5.3 thousand tonnes. It should be noted that all these countries have increased their purchased volumes in February compared to January.
