Cucumber sales and prices rise across Europe as supplies tighten
Cucumber sales offers declined sharply across Eastern Europe in early July 2026, while wholesale prices increased amid reduced availability from key suppliers including Türkiye and Ukraine.
On regional trading platforms covering 13 countries, the number of cucumber sales offers dropped significantly in week 28 of 2026. This decline occurred even as product availability from Türkiye increased slightly and advertisements from Greece returned to the market. Sellers from Iran and Egypt posted fewer offers, indicating lower export volumes from these key non-EU suppliers during the period.
In the Netherlands, the first local greenhouse harvest of the new Popits mini cucumber variety was completed, targeting the growing snack vegetable segment. Dutch supermarket sales of snack cucumbers rose by over 25% in 2024, with demand continuing strong in 2026, especially among households with children. This trend is boosting the competitiveness of Dutch cucumbers on the European market.
In Spain, breeders are focusing on extending the cucumber production calendar and improving varieties’ resistance to diseases. Spanish companies are releasing new greenhouse cucumber varieties adapted for year-round production, aiming to ensure stable supply and quality for export markets, including Central and Eastern Europe.
On Eastern European trade platforms, the reduction in cucumber supply coincided with higher wholesale prices. Although precise EUR prices are not stated for these markets, the trend of rising prices and reduced offers was observed across Ukraine, Türkiye, and other supplying countries. This tightening of supply is likely to impact import-dependent markets such as Poland, where local shortages and high prices have been reported.
In the Netherlands, greenhouse growers report that new cucumber varieties like Popits demonstrate high crop resilience and uniformity, potentially supporting more stable harvests and reducing post-harvest losses for exporters targeting European buyers.
