Cucumber supply expands in Ukraine and UK; Spanish production investments continue

Cucumber availability increased in Ukraine and the UK in late July 2026, with Ukraine reporting expanding trade and the UK securing long-term domestic supply contracts.

Cucumber supply continued to grow in Ukraine during week 30 of 2026, with regional trade expanding and more offers from Ukrainian, Turkish, and Iranian suppliers seen on wholesale platforms. The increased number of sellers reflects a seasonal peak in production and heightened trading activity across Eastern Europe. Most vegetable prices in Ukraine, however, increased during this period due to strong demand, despite the higher supply.

The UK retail chain Sainsbury’s launched a seasonal vegetable box including British-grown cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers, priced at 5 GBP per 800g box (approx. €7.4/kg for the box contents). Sainsbury’s also signed new long-term supply agreements with major British producers, aiming to boost year-round cucumber availability and mitigate risks related to climate extremes affecting traditional southern European suppliers.

In Spain, breeding companies are preparing for potential increases in cucumber acreage in the upcoming campaign, particularly in southeastern regions and the Canary Islands. New varieties such as Calidus and Galdius are being promoted for their disease resistance and adaptability, supporting efforts to stabilize and expand Spanish cucumber output for export markets during peak price months (January–March).

The expanded supply in Ukraine and increased UK domestic production may influence cucumber import demand in Poland, where persistent high prices have been reported. Higher availability from Ukraine and Western Europe could potentially affect wholesale pricing and competition on the Polish market.

The number of eggplant sellers in Ukraine also tripled in the same period, indicating broader growth in summer vegetable supply and active cross-border trading in the region.
