Dutch snack cucumber sales up 25%; European field cucumber shortages drive prices to €2.3–2.5/kg
Dutch supermarket sales of snack cucumbers rose by more than 25% in 2024, while field cucumber availability in Western Europe is severely limited, pushing wholesale prices to €2.3–2.5/kg.
In the Netherlands, sales of snack vegetables, especially snack cucumbers, increased significantly in 2024. Dutch supermarkets reported a 25% rise in snack cucumber sales compared to the previous year. The launch of new products such as Popits, a mini one-bite cucumber, has further stimulated consumer interest and supported growth in the snacking vegetable segment. Dutch producers completed their first domestic harvest of Popits in 2026, reporting resilient plants and uniform fruit development in greenhouse production.
On the broader European market, the supply of field-grown cucumbers has tightened sharply. In Western Europe, especially in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, extreme heatwaves and a lack of rainfall impacted cucumber crops in late June and early July. This resulted in a significant reduction in field cucumber availability, with wholesale prices rising to €2.3–2.5/kg (10.0–11.0 PLN/kg) in early July 2026. This price level is unusually high for mid-summer and is typically observed only in early spring when availability is lowest.
Dutch greenhouse cucumber producers have reported a more flexible harvest for snack types, which partially compensates for the shortage of field cucumbers but does not fully offset the overall supply gap. The limited supply has led to record prices on wholesale markets across Western Europe and has increased demand for imports from other EU countries and suppliers.
The sharp increase in cucumber prices and reduced availability in Western Europe is expected to impact importers such as Poland, where domestic supply is also limited. The high price environment may increase competition among European buyers for available stocks, particularly from Dutch greenhouse production.
Households with children remain the main driver of snack cucumber demand in the Netherlands, accounting for more than half of category purchases in 2024.
