French cucumber prices up 14% y/y in May; Dutch and Spanish supply dynamics affect EU market
French cucumber prices in May 2026 rose by 14% year on year, while Dutch mini-cucumber prices stabilized after Spain exited the market. European cucumber supply and trade flows are being shaped by weather and shifting competition.
French cucumber production for the 2026 marketing year is forecast at 194,100 tons, a 1% increase over 2025 and 10% above the five-year average. The area under cultivation in France is expected to reach 1,105 hectares, up 1% year on year. French cucumber prices in May 2026 averaged 14% higher than in May 2025 and 21% higher than the five-year May average, according to Agreste. In March, French wholesale prices remained 6% above March 2025 and 7% above the five-year average for that month.
Dutch mini-cucumber prices came under pressure in spring 2026 due to extended Spanish supply. Spain remained on the market longer than usual with high volumes, making it difficult for Dutch growers to enter. After Spain's withdrawal, Dutch prices stabilized and retail demand increased. Standard Dutch cucumber prices rose sharply in late June and early July, with indications of potential shortages due to recent heat affecting plant yields. Dutch growers report a slight increase in mini-cucumber acreage compared to last year.
French cucumber exports between January and April 2026 fell by 10% year on year to 5,700 tons, while imports declined by 5% to 30,200 tons. The French trade deficit in cucumbers for this period stood at 24,500 tons, 3% lower than the same period in 2025. Competition from Benelux and Spain increased in April, leading to a drop in French prices during that month, but demand and prices firmed again in May.
Spanish cucumber varieties, such as Martínez and Españolo, continue to dominate protected cultivation, allowing for high and continuous production throughout the year in regions like Almería and Granada. Spain's ability to maintain supply into late spring delayed the transition to Dutch product on the European market this year.
The weather has played a key role in market dynamics. Heatwaves in France at the end of May boosted consumption and prices, while high spring temperatures in the Netherlands benefited mini-cucumber sales but stressed plants, temporarily affecting yields. These supply and pricing trends in France, the Netherlands, and Spain are relevant for Polish importers and wholesalers, impacting availability and competition in Poland.
