Germany, Greece and Spain supply majority of potatoes to Poland; import prices at €0.40/kg

Germany remained the dominant supplier of potatoes to Poland from January to May 2026, accounting for 46% of total imports. The average import price for fresh or chilled potatoes in this period stood at €0.40/kg.

From January to May 2026, potato imports to Poland reached 62,390 tonnes, with Germany as the leading supplier. German shipments totaled 28,740 tonnes, representing 46.1% of all imports. The total value of potato imports during this period was 108.76 million PLN (€25.3 million), with an average price of €0.40/kg (1.74 PLN/kg). Greece followed as the second-largest supplier with 8,000 tonnes, while Cyprus (5,740 tonnes), France (4,920 tonnes), and Spain (4,520 tonnes) were also significant sources. In May alone, imports from Germany reached 8,500 tonnes, while Greece supplied 3,600 tonnes, Spain 3,150 tonnes, France 2,720 tonnes, and Egypt 1,280 tonnes. Italy also increased its shipments to 1,040 tonnes in May, and Romania entered the top suppliers with 528 tonnes, up from negligible volumes previously. Potatoes imported to Poland included both table potatoes and seed potatoes, as well as starch varieties. Deliveries from southern Europe and the Mediterranean—Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Egypt, and Italy—totaled over 24,640 tonnes in the first five months of 2026, making up nearly 40% of all imports. These trends indicate strong competition among European and Mediterranean suppliers for the Polish and regional markets. The UK continues to monitor potato storage for chlorpropham (CIPC) residues, with one in seven stores showing detectable levels, though all remain below the EU's temporary maximum residue level of 0.35mg/kg.
