Spanish retailers increase purchases of domestic peaches during summer 2026

Spanish supermarket chains have increased their purchases of local summer fruit, including peaches, by 20% compared to 2025 to meet higher seasonal demand.

Spanish retailers are prioritising domestic peaches and other summer fruits in their assortments during the 2026 summer season. DIA, one of Spain's leading supermarket chains, has allocated approximately €42 million to the purchase of summer fruit, including peaches, which is a 20% increase compared to the previous year. This expansion in procurement is being driven by formal agreements with 25 national suppliers, reflecting strong demand for fresh, locally sourced produce in Spain during July and August.

Mercadona, another major Spanish retailer, reports that over 85% of its fruit assortment in summer 2026 is of Spanish origin. Peaches, alongside other stone fruits, dominate the fresh produce section as consumer preferences shift towards seasonal and local products. Eroski, also a key player, has increased its summer fruit assortment from domestic sources by expanding collaborations with over 2,300 Spanish suppliers.

In Italy, wholesale prices for peaches and nectarines continue a downward trend as of 20 July 2026. The price decrease is more pronounced for nectarines, while a slight reduction in peach supply is helping to limit further price declines. The increased supply of seasonal fruit, combined with summer heat accelerating ripening and spoilage, is contributing to a softening of prices across Italian wholesale markets such as Milan, Bologna, Padua, and Rome. No precise EUR/kg figures are reported for peaches, but the trend remains downward.

The strong domestic focus of Spanish retail chains and increased local sourcing may reduce opportunities for foreign peach exporters to Spain and intensify competition for other European markets, including Poland. The heightened demand for Spanish peaches could also impact wholesale prices and availability in other EU countries during the peak summer period.

Andalusia maintains its leading position in Spanish fruit and vegetable exports, with over 60% of production destined for export markets. The region's focus on quality and export capacity supports its competitive presence across Europe, affecting trade flows to importing countries such as Poland.
