Tomato wholesale prices fall in Spain and Italy amid high summer supply

Spanish wholesale prices for mature tomatoes in Bilbao dropped to €0.90/kg in mid-July 2026, while Italian red tomato prices also eased due to abundant local production.

Wholesale prices for mature tomatoes at Mercabilbao, Spain’s central supply market, stood at €0.90/kg for the week of 14–17 July 2026. Green tomato prices were higher, ranging from €1.75 to €2.00/kg. The softening of mature tomato prices reflects increased summer supply in the Spanish market.

In Italy, red tomato prices showed a slight decline in mid-July 2026, attributed primarily to abundant availability from local harvests in several regions. The Italian market continues to experience downward price pressure on tomatoes due to seasonal peaks in production and regular demand.

Portugal continues to strengthen its position as an exporter of both processed and fresh tomatoes. In 2025, Portugal’s total fruit and vegetable exports reached €2.6 billion, up 5% year-on-year, with the European Union receiving 83.6% of this value. Tomatoes are among the leading export products, alongside berries and citrus. Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom remain the primary destinations for Portuguese tomatoes.

The strong presence of Portuguese tomatoes on EU markets increases competition for other major suppliers, including Spain and Italy. This affects price dynamics and export opportunities in receiving countries, such as Poland, where importers face more options and potentially lower prices in the summer season.

In Spain, companies with a long history in tomato cultivation, such as the Almería-based cooperative CASI, continue to be key players in the supply chain, contributing to the steady flow and availability of tomatoes for European buyers.
