Wide producer-retail price gap for Italian lettuce amid summer heat

2026-07-13 08:20

In Italy, the wholesale price paid to farmers for iceberg lettuce in July 2026 is €0.70/kg, while retail prices reach €3.90/kg, with input costs rising due to persistent heat and drought.

In the Italian market, the price paid to farmers for 1 kg of iceberg lettuce in July 2026 is €0.70, while the retail price in supermarkets stands at €3.90/kg, resulting in a 457% increase along the supply chain. This margin is among the widest for summer vegetables, according to a study by Cia-Agricoltori Italiani Padova. The gap is attributed to structural issues in the supply chain, with growers often receiving contracts at reduced prices despite rising consumer prices.

Italian lettuce growers are also facing higher fixed costs this summer, notably for electricity, diesel, and irrigation, as the season is marked by heat waves and ongoing drought. These weather conditions necessitate constant irrigation, further increasing production costs for lettuce and other open-field vegetables.

On the supply side, Italian breeders such as Enza Zaden are introducing new lettuce varieties with improved resistance to Bremia and Fusarium, aiming to ensure stable production and high-quality heads throughout the summer and early autumn. Varieties like Rebaila and Argentila are targeted for summer and early autumn harvests, while Blusia is adapted to the needs of central and northern Italian production regions. These innovations are intended to help stabilize supply in the face of biotic and abiotic stress factors.

In Spain and Portugal, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies involving companion planting (e.g., Lobularia maritima) are being trialed in lettuce production to improve biological control of thrips and reduce chemical pesticide applications. This approach is increasingly common in European lettuce fields and may help mitigate pest-related crop losses.

The current price dynamics and supply issues in Italy are relevant for importers in Poland and other European markets, as they may affect both the availability and the cost of imported Italian lettuce during the summer period.
