Export of sour cherries from Poland in 2020 based on GUS data

The volume of sour cherry exports (category 08092100 - Cherries (Prunus cerasus), fresh) from Poland in 2020 amounted to 7.0 thousand tonnes and its value reached the level of PLN 27.6 million. This means a significant year-on-year increase in both the volume and value of exports in this category.

In 2019, 5.4 thousand tonnes of sour cherries were exported from Poland for an amount of PLN 21.5 million. This gives a volume increase of 1.6 thousand tonnes, or 29.9 per cent, and a value increase of PLN 6.0 million, or 27.9 per cent.

The average price of fresh sour cherries exported from Poland was 3.95 PLN/kg in 2020 compared to 4.01 PLN/kg in 2019. This gives a year-on-year decrease of 1.5 per cent.

As for changes in the structure of sour cherry exports between 2019 and 2020, they remain dominated by deliveries to one main customer, Germany. As much as 83.0 per cent of fresh cherries exported from Poland in 2020 went to this country. As regards the next countries among the five main recipients, there have been quite a few changes.

Germany has strengthened its leading position by increasing its volume from 3.8 to 5.8 thousand tonnes.

The Netherlands moved up to second place from fifth with a volume of 0.2 thousand tonnes.

Hungary remained in third place with a volume decrease from 0.3 to 0.2 thousand tonnes.

Belarus has dropped to fourth place from second with a drop in volume from 0.4 to 0.2 thousand tonnes of sour cherries exported.

Moldova entered fifth place from eighth with a volume of 0.1 000 tonnes.

Serbia dropped from fourth to ninth place with exports shrinking from 0.2 to 0.1 thousand tonnes.

The average price of all exports is mainly determined by sales prices to Germany. In 2020, the average price at which Germany bought Polish sour cherries was 3.91 PLN/kg and was the highest among the five main buyers. Moldova bought the cheapest - at an average of 2.21 PLN/kg.
