Greater demand for white cabbage on the Polish market

2021-10-14 09:39
The situation on the Polish wholesale white cabbage market has been bad until recently. Just as bad as a year ago. Current supply is high, as it is at harvest time, while demand has remained very limited. This has resulted in prices at last year's low level. At the large wholesalers it was usually 0.40-0.50 PLN per kilo. And this despite the fact that it is already known that this year's cabbage harvest will be worse compared to 2020.

However, demand for cabbage has clearly improved recently. There is more interest from wholesale buyers in the fresh market, but demand for cabbage for processing has particularly increased. Perhaps the factor of a lower harvest has started to affect the market more clearly? In particular, this should become apparent when all the cabbage has been harvested and poorer quality goods that are not suitable for storage have rolled through the market. Due to the unfavourable conditions during the growing season, there is a lot of such cabbage.

The strengthening of demand has resulted in an upward rebound in prices. On the fresh market, prices in the big wholesale are currently 0,50-0,65 PLN/kg, that is almost 29 per cent higher than a week ago. It is also 35 per cent more expensive than at the same time last year. However, as you can see from our graph, even such an increase has not fundamentally changed the situation compared to previous seasons. In October 2019, 2018 and 2015, the average price was significantly better.
