Greenhouse cucumbers at record high again in Poland

2021-10-11 10:21
More or less since the second decade of August, the current season on the wholesale greenhouse cucumber market in Poland has started to look more and more like last year's season. This in itself was surprising insofar as the two seasons had previously been their opposites.

The March-May period in 2020 was a time of low prices, but at the peak of the season - in June and July - it became expensive. In 2021, it was exactly the opposite, but in August the 2021 season began to resemble the one a year earlier. Now, in the final trading phase of domestic greenhouse cucumbers, we again have rapid price growth and a record high. Exactly like a year ago, as you can see in our chart.

The supply of domestic greenhouse cucumbers has fallen sharply recently, which has caused a spike in their wholesale prices. At the large wholesalers they were at 5.5-6.50 PLN/kg, even 15 per cent higher than last year. They were quickly corrected to the current level of 5.40-6.00 PLN/kg, but this is still more expensive than in recent years.

The reason for the correction was the appearance of an import offer on the Polish market. With domestic cucumber prices so high, this is not surprising. All the more so given that in Spain, greenhouse cucumber prices are at a very low level. Yesterday, long cucumbers were sold at wholesale auctions in Almeria at €0.32-0.50/kg. At the beginning of October it was just €0.18-0.37/kg, but such low prices and the decline in supply in northern Europe have stimulated demand for Spanish offerings.
