Beetroots - a chance for higher exports from Poland

2021-02-05 11:54
The end of January and beginning of February brought a recovery of beetroot prices in the large wholesalers (by the way, in the small wholesalers price increases in this segment were even more dynamic). However, these last changes (-16 per cent) were not significant enough to significantly change the overall market picture.

This can be seen in the chart above. Current selling prices for washed beet, packed in bags, are 0.40-0.60 PLN/kg at the large wholesaler, which gives an average of 0.50 PLN/kg, which is lower than six of the previous ten quotations for the beginning of February. On top of this, it is well known that beet is a vegetable that is unlikely to show much tendency to jump in price.

But this season there is a chance for them to increase sales and get better prices. As we wrote on fresh-market.pl citing information from the Ukrainian portal EastFruit, beet has just started to grow in price in Ukraine as a result of lower supply.

The Ukrainian portal writes that the production of beet in Ukraine has fallen to such an extent that imports of this vegetable will be unavoidable this season. And this is where the opportunity opens up for Polish suppliers. The chart above also shows the average price curve from the 2010/2011 season. Back then, Ukraine experienced a beet supply crunch and prices there rose dramatically, which also pushed Polish beet prices to record levels. This season it is unlikely to be as expensive, but such exports would undoubtedly support the stabilization of the upward price trend.
