Chinese cabbage in Poland more expensive than a year ago

2021-08-10 10:25
The rather extreme heat plus thunderstorms and even hailstorms - such weather in Poland in July was clearly not good for Chinese cabbage crops. It is true that we could observe an increase in the supply of this cabbage on the fresh market, which in the third decade of last month was reflected in a downward trend in the prices of this cabbage in the large wholesalers, but this trend was rather weak. This can be seen in comparison with the previous season, for example. Let's look at the graph below.

This year, the typical summer price bottom for Chinese cabbage at the large wholesaler was delayed and quite shallow. And the beginning of August brought a reversal of the price trend. Now, sales prices ("at the ready") are usually within the range of 1.80-2.50 PLN/kg at the large wholesaler. This shows that we have a shortage on the market, especially of high quality goods.

And no wonder. Hot weather and rains have caused the crop to suffer and continue to suffer - from damage, pests and fungal diseases. What is more, the medium-late varieties are now coming to an end, which further reduces the current supply. Hence the price increase, which will continue until the main autumn harvest gains momentum. However, it can already be assumed that the prices of this cabbage in the later part of the season will remain slightly above last year's level, since late varieties of "pekinek" have also suffered from the negative effects of unstable weather.
