Fresh-market.pl recently reported on WAPA's updated forecast for the European Union's pear harvest in 2021 (see here). For Poland, the data has not changed and speaks of a harvest at the level of 70 thousand tonnes, i.e. 5 thousand tonnes (8 per cent) more than a year earlier. But the forecast shows that across the EU-27 plus the UK, the pear harvest this year was more than a quarter lower than last year. In absolute terms, that's a drop of more than 570,000 tonnes.
This is a huge gap in the pear market and this deficit is already visible in European trade in this fruit. On the Polish market too. The low supply of pears on the EU market has translated into higher prices since the start of the current season. In addition, buyers, knowing that there will be problems with supplying the fruit, are increasing their stocks and are thus strengthening demand.
This higher demand can also be seen on the Polish market and is reflected in wholesale prices of pears. Buying prices of the most popular variety is currently most often 2.80-3.50 PLN/kg. This is by 44 per cent more than in October this year and by 28 per cent above the level of the same period last year. Prices for Lucas and Xenia pears are slightly lower than for Conference (2.60-3.40 PLN/kg), but they are also significantly above last year's levels. It is worth adding that now, in mid-December, prices of pears in Poland are at the level they were a year ago in April, when supplies of this fruit in Polish cold stores were running out.
