Early onion season starts in Poland
This year the early onion season in Poland starts earlier than in 2021. Which does not mean that this year's start is early at all. No, in relation to the "norm" it is also delayed, but much less than a year ago. Then, the first batches of winter onions appeared only in the second decade of June.
We are therefore in a de facto transition period - the first limited batches of early onions are appearing, but the market is still dominated by onions from last year's harvest. And there is still a lot of the "old" onions in Poland. This is also because we have been receiving a large supply of Dutch onions for processing, which has meant that no domestic onions have been sent to Poland.
This results, on the one hand, in constant pressure on prices of bagged "old" onions and, on the other hand, in the fact that potential demand for winter onions will be lower than it would be in conditions of shortage of "old" onions. how does this translate into price reality?
Prices for onions from the 2021 harvest remain stable. It is 0.70-0.75 PLN per kilo for loose, phased onions. Bagged onions are priced at 1.00-1.30 PLN per kilo at the large wholesaler and this level has been stable since the beginning of May. In addition, such prices apply to bulbs of thicker calibres. Smaller onions in bags can be bought at 0.80-0.90 PLN per kilo. On the other hand, prices for the first "winter onions" are at 4.00-5.00 PLN/kg and are similar to those at the start of last season.
