EU apple production is expected to increase by 10 per cent to 12.5 million tonnes in 2021/2022 (+8 per cent compared to the five-year average), thanks to an increase in production in Poland (+27 per cent year-on-year), a projected increase in cultivated area (+7 per cent) and favourable weather conditions. These data are contained in the European Commission's report on agricultural markets published this week, AgroBusiness writes.

The high availability of Polish apples and low prices should lead to an increase in the share of apples in the processing sector (to 34 percent in 2021/2022 against 29 percent in 2020/2021).

In total, some 7.8 million tonnes of apples will be sold for fresh consumption (+2 per cent y-o-y) and 4.1 million tonnes will go to processing. Per capita consumption of fresh apples in the EU is expected to remain high (15.3 kg) due to lower prices and growing awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. It is noted that with a stable demand for processed apples, there is a growing demand for organic products without added sugar.
