Export of onion from Poland in the first quarter of 2021

2021-05-20 11:35
The export volume of onion (CN category 070310 - Onion and shallots, fresh or chilled) in the first quarter of 2021 amounted to 45.7 thousand tonnes and its value reached 84.8 million PLN. This means a year-on-year decrease in exports in this category both in terms of quantity and value.

In the first quarter of 2020, exports in this category amounted to 51.1 thousand tonnes and PLN 118.6 million. This gives a decrease in volume by 5.4 thousand tonnes, i.e. by 10.6 per cent, and a decrease in value by as much as PLN 33.80 million, i.e. by 28.5 per cent.

As far as the average price of onions in export in the discussed period is concerned, since we are analysing the aggregated category (onions, spring onions and shallots), we will refer only to the prices of the category 07031019 - Fresh or chilled onions, except spring onions. In the first quarter of 2021, the average price of this onion was 1.78 PLN/kg, compared to the level of 2.20 PLN/kg in 2019, a decrease of 19.1 per cent.

In terms of changes in the geographical structure of Polish onion exports between the first quarter of 2020 and the same period of 2021, there have been several reshuffles within the top five recipients of Polish onion.

In first place, the Netherlands has strengthened its position, increasing the volume of onion purchased in Poland from 11.7 to 12.5 thousand tonnes.

Belgium has moved up from third place, increasing its volume from 7.1 to 10.5 thousand tonnes.

The United Kingdom dropped to third place from second, with a decrease in volume from 10.9 to 8.0 thousand tonnes.

France remained in fourth place with a drop in volume from 6.1 to 3.3 thousand tonnes.

Romania moved up to fifth place from sixth with an increase in volume from 2.4 to 3.1 thousand tonnes.

Germany dropped to sixth place from fifth with a reduction in volume from 3.3 to 2.8 thousand tonnes.

It should be noted, however, that France, as the only country mentioned, has a dominant share of shallots in the structure of Polish onion imports. If only onions of category 07031019 are taken into account, France, with a volume of 1.9 thousand tonnes, is below Romania and Germany.

As for the average prices of onion exported to these countries (also taking into account only the 07031019 category), the most expensive Polish onion was sold in the first quarter of 2021 to the Netherlands - at an average of 2.00 PLN/kg, and the cheapest to Romania - at an average of 1.58 PLN/kg.
