First domestic cauliflowers on the Polish market
The first deliveries of cauliflowers from domestic cultivation have arrived at small wholesalers in Poland. Of course, these are still cauliflowers from under high cover. The start of this season came at a similar time to last year, i.e. slightly later than normal. And this is understandable given this year's cool spring.
So far, the supply of domestic cauliflower is scarce, which translates into high prices. At the Kalisz exchange these cauliflowers were initially offered at 6.00 PLN/piece, and yesterday at 5.00-6.00 PLN/piece. At the Bronisze near Warsaw, prices are at 6.00-7.00 PLN/piece. This is marginally cheaper than a year ago, when Kalisz started from 6.00-7.00 PLN/pc and Bronisze from 6.50-7.50 PLN/pc.
The lower prices compared to last year may come as a surprise if we consider the fact that in the current season, not only the producers but also the distribution and trade have to face higher costs. However, it should be noted that the current price level of the domestic offer is significantly influenced by the prices of imported cauliflowers. And these are currently much lower year-on-year, because in the wholesale trade on a larger scale, French or Dutch cauliflowers are offered at 4.00-5.50 PLN/unit, that is, at 4.75 PLN/unit. On average, a year ago it was 7.00 PLN/unit, so we have a year-on-year drop of 32 percent. The current prices of cauliflowers (also those imported) are highly correlated with the weather and may well rise significantly further.
