The first two decades of November were marked by hopes of an improvement in prices on the Polish apple market, which had earlier reached an abysmally low level. It was known that if apple prices rose, it would be mainly for popular export varieties, including Gala. These predictions have been confirmed.
November and the beginning of December also brought an upward trend in wholesale prices for Gala apples, a variety which remains top in terms of export demand. Even at these earlier low levels, prices remained higher than for other varieties. It should be noted, however, that in the current season the 70+ calibre Gala is in much greater demand and these apples have increased in price more dynamically. Smaller Galas have also made gains, but less so.
Gala 65+ calibre apples are currently most often priced between 1.10-1.50 PLN/kg and this is 18% more than at the end of the first week of November. As for apples of calibre 70+, prices are currently between 1.50-2.00 PLN/kg, an increase of 25 per cent since the end of the first week of November. However, prices above PLN 1.80/kg are rare and only apply to apples of above-average quality striped sorts.
The graph above shows that prices for the finer Gala are still below not only last season's prices (-16 per cent) but also those for 2019/2020 (although only by 3.7 per cent). The situation is slightly different with Gala 70+. Here, current prices are already 9 per cent above those of two years ago on average, and are only 2.8 per cent below those of a year ago.
