Golden Delicious apple prices still above average in Poland, but...

2021-11-08 11:57
The prices of Golden Delicious apples in Poland remain above average compared to the vast majority of varieties growing in Polish orchards. This is a fairly typical situation, and it is very rare for Golden Delicious apples to drop in price to the level of "reds". There is nothing strange about this, because Golden is one of the most popular "mass" varieties in Europe and in the world - grown on a large scale. In Poland its prices are usually lower than those of other varieties, such as Gala apples.

Let us recall that in Europe the Golden Delicious variety accounts for as much as one fifth of the annual harvest. In Poland this relative share of Golden Delicious in apple production is lower (10-15%), due to the above-average share of Idared. The harvest of Golden Delicious in Europe (according to WAPA forecasts) is expected to reach 2.12 million tonnes in 2021. This is 8 per cent more than a year ago, but still 4 per cent less than the 2018-2019 average (thanks to a record harvest in 2018).

At the moment, the price situation remains difficult on the Polish apple market. Prices of some varieties have strengthened after the harvest, but very slightly. Golden is also in this group. Purchase prices for this variety are 1.00-1.30 PLN/kg for cal. 70+, although this season cal. 75/90 is preferred. This is traditionally more than the amounts offered for "reds", but fruit growers are far from satisfied. Prices are still relatively low, as can be seen in our graph. The average is now nearly a third lower year-on-year, and production and storage costs have risen sharply over the past year.
