Green beans are not getting cheaper on the Polish market
Prices of domestic string beans remain high in Poland. The end of May and the beginning of June this year saw larger wholesale trade at the level of 21.00-26.00 PLN per kilo. This gives an average of 23.50 PLN per kilo, which is slightly higher than a year ago. In the small wholesale trade, prices for this vegetable are reaching 30 PLN/kg.
If this is the wholesale price of green beans, then what prices are they selling for at markets and green groceries? Surely, these are prices that discourage most consumers from buying. Recently it has become fashionable in the non-industry media to show how expensive asparagus is on the basis of so-called "horror receipts". We are unlikely to get a receipt at a market, but this does not mean that beans cannot be included in the list of examples of overpricing.
The question is, at the beginning of June, and especially in weather like this, are wholesale prices of around PLN 25/kg really anything unusual? The supply of green beans, despite the fact that buying for the fresh market has already started, remains very low. And the significantly higher production costs compared to previous years are not encouraging growers to lower their prices excessively in this situation.
Let us also remember that it only takes a few days of sunny weather for the supply situation in this segment to start changing quickly. We saw a similar situation last year. Then, the season in the large wholesale market started later - around 7 June and with an average price of 17.50 PLN/kg. Also expensive. And already on 25 June it was 7.00 PLN/kg.
