Import of onion to Poland in Q1 2021

The volume of onion imports to Poland (category 070310 - Onion and shallots, fresh or chilled) amounted to 36.0 thousand tonnes in the first quarter of 2021, and its value reached PLN 43.5 million. This means a significant year-on-year decrease in imports in this category, both in terms of volume and value.

In the first quarter of 2020, Poland imported 55.0 thousand tonnes of onion for PLN 64.1 million. It means 18,9 thousand tons or 34,4 per cent decrease in quantity and 20,6 million zlotys or 32,1 per cent decrease in value.

As far as the average price of imported onions in the discussed period is concerned, since we analyse the aggregated category (onions, spring onions and shallots), we will refer only to the prices of the category 07031019 - Fresh or chilled onions, except spring onions. In the first quarter of 2021, the average price of this onion was 0.78 PLN/kg compared to 0.93 PLN/kg in the same period of 2020, which means a 16.1 per cent decrease year-on-year.

As for changes in the geographical structure of onion imports to Poland between the first quarter of 2019 and the corresponding period of 2020, they were significant.

The Netherlands managed to remain in first place despite a reduction in deliveries from 44.3 to 30.8 thousand tonnes.

Germany remained in second position with a volume decrease from 4.7 to 3.0 thousand tonnes.

France is in third place, up from fourth, although the volume supplied from France has fallen from 1.3 to 0.5 thousand tonnes. Italy has moved up to fourth place from sixth with an increase in volume from 0.3 to 0.5 thousand tonnes.

Ukraine remained in fifth place with a reduction in volume from 0.9 to 0.4 thousand tonnes.

Outside the top five (down from third to sixth place) was Spain, where onion imports fell from 1.9 to 0.3 thousand tonnes. However, it is worth noting that Ukraine was third in onion imports of category 07031019 only, ahead of Italy, Spain and France.

Among the above-mentioned major suppliers, the highest average price in 2021 was for onion (in the category 07031019) from Spain - 4.28 PLN/kg, and the lowest price was for Dutch onion - 0.70 PLN/kg (however, in this case the average is understated by the large share of cheaper onion for peeling).
