Limited supply of carrots in the Polish market

2021-05-17 11:31
The supply of carrots from the 2020 harvest is already limited, and stocks of carrots of decent quality are already low. The situation cannot be fundamentally improved by the import of Dutch carrots as their prices are relatively high.

Wholesale prices of carrots imported from Holland are currently between 1.60 and 2.00 PLN per kilo, with an average of 1.80 PLN per kilo, i.e. 9% more expensive year-on-year. However, Dutch carrots are also subject to quality problems and there is no shortage of wholesalers on the Dutch market who would be happy to import young carrots from Spain if it weren't for the high prices. Indeed, the cold weather has hampered and delayed vegetable production across Europe.

Prices for domestic carrots from the 2020 harvest are currently between PLN 1.30 and PLN 1.90 per kilo, for brushed carrots packed in bags. Its average price increased by 23 per cent in May, which best shows the scale of supply problems. After all, it must be remembered that the HoReCa sector is still not functioning normally in the country, which strongly affects demand.

The cold spring weather will significantly delay the new season and the "old" carrots must last longer. A year ago, domestic young carrots in bunches were already available in mid-May. And although the supply of this product never accounts for a large share of the total carrot supply, but it does its roni. So is the presence of imported young carrots, for which we still have to wait this year. Therefore, at the end of this month, carrot prices could easily be at the level of two years ago.
