Mandarins are getting cheaper in Poland, but are more expensive than a year ago

There is still some time left until the seasonal peak in the trade of tangerines on the Polish market, but a revival is already visible in this segment - both in demand and in supply. The "mandarin" offer at importers and in supermarkets is more abundant and diversified (apart from South African fruit, those from Spain and Greece are already appearing).
But the supply, although higher, is not high. Not even as much as in the same period last year, although even then the supply of mandarins was not at all high. This can be seen in the prices of these fruit in the Polish wholesale trade.
Currently, the prices of mandarins in wholesale offers on a larger scale are mainly between 5.00 and 7.00 PLN per kilogram, which gives an average of 6.00 PLN per kilogram. This means that since the beginning of October, mandarins have fallen by a fifth. However, a year ago the downward trend was faster and in the same period the average price was only 4.50 PLN per kg. For comparison, two years ago the average price was PLN 5.00 per kg.
As you can see, the differences are considerable. In part, this is the result of harvest problems, about which information is coming from Spain. The Greeks are benefiting from this for the second year in a row. But the supply problem of imported fruit has a broader basis. It is linked to the crisis in logistics and the imbalance in the fuel and energy markets, which has resulted in dynamic price increases in these sectors. Another factor unfavourable to high imports to Poland is the persistent weakening of the zloty against the euro.
