More for cucumbers in Poland

2022-04-14 10:21

The second half of March brought a fairly dynamic drop in prices of domestic greenhouse cucumbers offered to the wholesale trade on a larger scale. This drop was caused by an increase of the current supply on the market not yet mature in terms of demand. By the beginning of April, prices had fallen by a third on average, as can be seen in our graph.

But even so, the average price for the current season remained above the ceilings of previous seasons throughout this time. It was apparent that the issue of this year's high production costs was having an impact on the price realities of the greenhouse vegetable market.

However, the beginning of April first brought a halt to the downward trend described above, and then its reversal - cucumber prices started to climb instead of falling further. This change was influenced by several factors. The most important one is the weather. This year the spring is not spoiling and the first half of April is generally cold, which affects vegetation, also in greenhouses. Secondly, imports, which were expensive all the time this year, have practically disappeared from our market (here we can also see the influence of increased costs: production and especially transport costs). There is also a seasonal factor - Easter is approaching and this is a period of revived demand for greenhouse cucumbers.

Prices of these vegetables at large wholesalers (still limited in terms of quantities) are currently most often 8.50-9.50 PLN/kg. As you can see on the chart above, this is a record high for this phase of the season. Since last year's level, the average price is now higher by as much as 100 percent!
