For much of the current industrial apple season, the supply of industrial apples has been limited, and at times even low. This has forced processors to raise prices to obtain the necessary quantities of apples. This was even despite the fact that concentrate prices were not rising at the time.
Recently, since March, the reality has changed. Firstly, there is less demand for industry, because some companies have not been buying apples since the winter. So there are fewer active players on the market who generate current demand for raw material. On the other hand, the supply of industrial apples clearly started to increase in March, which created downward pressure on purchase prices.
And such a decrease has taken place. Currently, purchase prices for standard industry are 0.40-0.45 PLN/kg, a level similar to that of July last year but still higher (+23%) than the peak in January this year. Dry industry prices are 0.45-0.50 PLN/kg and here we have the level from January.
Where did this "excess" industrial apple come from? From cold stores, of course. Many fruit growers have been putting apples in them since the beginning of the year, hoping for a repeat of the "suction" from a year ago. Unfortunately, instead of growing, exports slowed down in March, and April brought no improvement. There are plenty of dessert apples and those of poorer quality have to be pushed out to industry.
