New potatoes are rapidly becoming cheaper in the Polish market

The prices of domestic new potatoes in Poland are already falling fast, even though it's only the beginning of the marketing season for these vegetables. On top of this, we've had a year with a record cold spring, which has caused a big slip in the vegetation of vegetables, including potatoes, so their current supply is even lower than in "normal" years.
And yet prices are bottoming out. This in itself is no surprise, as this is the typical direction of price movements for early potatoes in Poland. And the reason for this trend is nothing new either. There is a large supply of imported early potatoes. At first this was mainly from Cyprus, Egypt and Greece. Now our market is being flooded by early potatoes from Romania, the availability of which has risen sharply in recent days, while wholesale prices have fallen. Now, early Romanian potatoes are being offered at 2.00-2.20 zlotys per kilo, a fifth cheaper than a week ago.
This is putting pressure on domestic potato prices. Plus the fact that there are more and more Polish potatoes. Demand for them is considerable on the retail market. But the catering industry is still in anti-pandemic restriction mode and this translates into general demand. When it comes to prices, Polish early potatoes are being offered at 2.50-4.00 PLN/kg (south and centre of the country). This is half as cheap as last Friday.
