Onion market situation in Poland

2021-11-10 09:50
Prices of onion packed in bags have shown a certain upward trend on the Polish wholesale market in recent days. This is not a common occurrence in the autumn period, when theoretically the supply of onions should be high. Nevertheless, there are seasons like this. For example, last year's, although then prices rose from a much lower ceiling in the autumn, as can be seen in the graph below.

In the more similar 2018/2019 season to this one, onion prices also rose in November. And, more importantly, then the upward trend continued for a longer period, until mid-December. Could something like this happen in the current season as well?

At the moment it is difficult to predict. There is a lot of uncertainty on the market, although it is clear that the harvest in Poland was not high and that there will be problems with quality. On the other hand, the Netherlands has announced that the harvest there will nevertheless be high, which has been immediately reflected in prices on the market there. We can also be sure that, with the closure of the African market to the Netherlands and no repetition of the extraordinary situation in Asia, the pressure of Dutch onions on the European market will increase considerably in the second half of the season. And this could inhibit potential price increases in Poland.

For the time being, prices are quite stable, as the last increase was 11 per cent. Prices for bagged onions are 0.80-1.20 PLN/kg in the large wholesale. In November 2018 there was already an average of 1.40 PLN/kg. So the potential for further increases is considerable.
