Onion prices in Poland- slowly but upwards

2021-12-16 10:53
The Polish wholesale onion market (fresh market) remains quite stable, but the long-term trend is upward when it comes to bagged onion prices. This upward trend may not be overly dynamic, but its direction certainly pleases producers. Let us recall that the beginning of the regular season for trading onions from sowing was not good this year.

The chart shows that the average selling price of onion, packed in bags, has increased in the big wholesale since the beginning of November and up to now it has gained +17 per cent. As mentioned above - this may not be an impressive increase, but it has "brought" the average price to a level higher than nine out of ten quotations in the same period of previous seasons. Only in the 2018/2019 season onions were more expensive in Poland.

The question is, how will the situation develop in the following months? It seems that the continuation of the weak upward trend is as likely as possible. Producers need to compensate for the large increase in storage costs with quality. The continued weakening of the zloty against the euro limits the competitiveness of Dutch or German onions, although it should be recalled that prices in the Netherlands are falling. A price rise is therefore possible, but rather not on the scale of three years ago.
