Big drop in aubergine prices in Poland

2021-02-01 11:41
A lot has been going on in the aubergine market this January. A real snowy and cold winter arrived in Spain, causing a catastrophic drop in the current harvest of the vegetable in Almeria and Murcia, where this production is centered. This has caused a drastic increase in the price of these vegetables.

And this price rise has particularly affected aubergines. Here, the supply problems were so great that, at one point, aubergines basically disappeared from the shelves of Polish markets, and there were very few wholesale products. As a result, the prices of these vegetables broke historical records of the season - in January 2017, the average price of aubergines at the large wholesaler jumped to the ceiling of PLN 18.00/kg.

Now it was even more expensive. At the beginning of the third decade of January this year, the prices of these vegetables in the large wholesale were at 19.00-23.00 zlotys/kg, which gave an average of 21.00 zlotys/kg. However, aubergine prices have fallen sharply in the new week, thanks to an improvement in the supply situation in Spain and discounts at wholesale auctions there. There, prices fell between 19 January and 30 January from an average of €3.74/kg to €0.65/kg, or 82.6 per cent. In Poland, prices fell from 17.00-20.00 zlotys/kg to 8.00-10.00 zlotys/kg, i.e. by 51.4 per cent.
