Higher prices also for cucumbers in Poland

2021-01-13 13:29

Prices for greenhouse cucumbers imported from Spain have jumped sharply. This is the result of the collapse of the weather on the Iberian Peninsula, through which the winter weather front Filomena - cold and snowy - is sweeping. Central Spain is the hardest hit, but the situation is also difficult in the south-east of the country, including the centre of greenhouse production in the Andalusian region of Almeria.

The weather collapse has drastically slowed down vegetable production there, including greenhouse cucumbers. Their prices have risen by leaps and bounds. In the case of prices at wholesale auctions in Almeria, the average price for Frances cucumbers (long cucumbers) has increased from 0.51 euros/kg (as at 30.12.2020) to 1.29 euros/kg (as at 12.01.2021), or by 153 per cent. The average price of Almeria-type (short) cucumbers rose from just €0.28/kg to €1.62/kg (9.01), an increase of 479 per cent. Yesterday, however, the price dropped to 1.48 euros/kg.

In Poland, prices for cucumbers imported from Spain have risen from 4.00-6.50 zlotys/kg (quotation 31.12.2020) to the current level of 9.00-11.00 zlotys/kg, an average increase of 90 per cent. But such a high price ceiling has resulted in a drastic fall in cucumber sales, so some downward adjustments can rather be expected. Small quantities of Polish greenhouse cucumbers have equally high prices of 9.00-11.00 zł/kg.
