Lemons in Poland are more expensive than a year ago

2021-01-13 13:35

In the first half of 2020, the price of lemons grew dynamically, but this trend did not start until the end of January and accelerated as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak spreading across Europe. However, in mid-January, the price of lemons in the Polish large wholesalers continued to fall and dropped to an average of PLN 4.00/kg.

This was even lower than in January 2019, when the average price went down to £4.00/kg briefly at the very end of that month. And now, January 2021 is more expensive than the same month in 2020. At present, wholesale prices are at 3.50-6.00 zlotys per kilogram, giving an average of 4.75 zlotys per kilogram, 5.5 per cent higher year-on-year.

This situation is unlikely to last long. Even if prices do not fall now, they are unlikely to rise as dynamically as last year. At least in the spring period, when the trading season for lemons from southern Europe will be underway. Demand in Europe, including Poland, is not as strong as it was last year, even though the coronavirus pandemic continues. The situation may change in late spring when the supply of lemons from Spain, Italy and Turkey begins to dwindle and the European Commission maintains its ban on lemons from Argentina (for now, it has been imposed until the end of April).
