Low demand for red cabbage in Poland

2021-01-19 10:55

In January 2019, we had a clear recovery in the wholesale red cabbage market. The demand side of this market became strongly active in the search for goods, and this triggered a dynamic increase in the price of this cabbage as early as the first week of 2019. An increase that lasted basically until the end of the season and lifted the average selling price from £1.10/kg at the beginning of January 2019 to a ceiling of £3.40/kg around 20 April. A year later the prosperity for this cabbage was much worse, but despite this the average price in January 2020 did not fall below £1.00/kg.

This year it is significantly worse than a year ago and much worse than two years ago. Since mid-December, sales prices for red cabbage have been as low as 0.40-0.60 zlotys per kilogram on the large wholesale market. This gives an average of £0.50/kg, half lower year-on-year and as much as 65.5 per cent lower compared to the same period in 2019.

Last year, red cabbage producers complained, but mainly about weakening demand. Prices in January were still not bad. You can see this in our graph. Now, not only is demand dismal, as interest in this cabbage is almost zero, but prices are also among the lowest in recent years, which can also be seen in our chart. And the price curve from the 2014/2015 season shows that the prospects for the coming months are not optimistic in this segment of the fresh vegetable market.
