Polish apple exports 2020/2021

The past 2020/2021 trade season, in terms of Polish apple exports, was often assessed quite critically, mainly through the prism of its final phase. At that time, apple stocks remained at record highs, while export volumes and values fell dynamically from month to month. This has been happening since March 2021.

This was the result of a fall in demand for apples on the international market. As a result, there was then a marked fall in apple prices. This fall in Polish apple exports was particularly marked from May 2021 onwards.

The average price of apples exported from Poland, as can be seen on the graph, first fell sharply after the end of the harvest and then rose steadily in a not very dynamic upward trend. In March 2021 it stabilised at 1.92 PLN/kg and then fell to 1.65 PLN/kg, i.e. by 14 per cent compared with the March-April level.

However, comparing the 2020/2021 export season to the previous four, it is clear that the picture is different. First of all, it can be seen that the 2020/2021 season was not particularly different from previous seasons. In terms of the volume of apples exported, it was better than the 2019/2020 and 2017/2018 seasons. We should remember that the 2020 harvest was not abundant, so it is hardly surprising to see lower volumes in foreign trade.

On the other hand, as can be seen in the "value" chart, in monetary terms the 2020/2021 season stands out positively compared to the previous three. Only in the 2016/2017 season was the value of Polish dessert apples sold abroad slightly (+1.4%) higher than in the season under review.

This was possible thanks to the prices obtained for dessert apples in the season 2020/2021. Despite a fall in these prices in recent months, the average value for the whole season was relatively high (1.84 PLN/kg).
