Potatoes in Poland- demand is there, but...

2021-02-04 11:55
The situation on the Polish wholesale potato market has slightly improved compared to January this year. The improvement may not be huge, as it's around 20 per cent on average in terms of prices, but compared to what happened earlier, it's still not bad. In addition, there are prospects for a continuation of this trend.

The problem is that the factors that support demand and price growth are selective and do not affect every range of potatoes and every producer. At least when it comes to one very important factor - demand from Ukraine.

We have published information on fresh-market.pl about the low stock of decent quality potatoes in Ukrainian warehouses. Since December, Polish exports to the Ukraine have been flowing in ever wider streams. However, the importers there are interested in goods that have been tested and delivered in large batches.

There is also another factor that is pushing up potato prices - the winter weather. Poland has experienced a real winter with minus temperatures and snow. Synopticians predict that it could get even colder in February. This will mean a drop in the supply of potatoes, as some stocks, especially those stored outside cold stores, will suffer. In addition, this cold winter is conducive to increased demand.

So it looks like the outlook for wholesale potato prices in Poland has improved. At the moment, for tubers of 45+ calibre, packed in bags, of yellow varieties, prices at the large wholesaler are between 0.27-0.45 PLN/kg. This gives an average of 0.36 PLN/kg. This average would be higher if calculated only for good quality potato offers.
