Strawberries - supply is growing, but prices?
The Spanish strawberry marketing campaign is gaining momentum. Maybe slowly and with delays due to the slippage of the harvest (through the weather). Experts estimate that by the end of the 10th week of this year, 26.1 per cent of the strawberries that will go to market in this entire campaign have been harvested (estimates based on harvest dynamics from previous years). But the fact is that the supply of strawberries in Spain is increasing and their prices are falling following a trend that has been going on since week 7.
Spanish data show that at the end of week 10, the average price of Class I strawberries was 5 per cent lower week-on-week at €2.00/kg. At the same time, it was still higher than in the 2018/2019 (1.51 euros/kg) and 2019/2020 (1.18 euros/kg) campaigns.
And how did the case of imported strawberries look on the Polish wholesale market? Since the beginning of March, we have noted a continuing downward trend in wholesale prices for fresh strawberries on our market. This is the result of an increase in their supply as the campaign in Spain unfolds, but also (and the importance of this factor is very great) of limited demand as a result of the closure of the catering sector. Since the beginning of this month, strawberry prices in the offers of wholesale importers have fallen by around 37 per cent and are now mostly at PLN 10.00-14.00/kg, depending on packaging.
According to information from Spanish experts, the prices on the Spanish strawberries on the wholesale market in France have been dropping similarly. Especially in week 10, when the drops were between 12 and 25 per cent depending on the packaging (e.g. a 1kg tray was priced at €3.80-4.90). The situation for Spanish strawberries in the German wholesale was more stable. On the Berlin exchange, strawberries in a 500g basket maintained a price of 6.00 euros/kg.
