We have another year which is very difficult for Polish farmers, including vegetable producers. Serious difficulties can also be seen when it comes to white cabbage production. One of the main causes of these problems is the weather. Let us recall that last year the summer was also very difficult for cabbage producers, also due to agro-meteorological conditions.
All summer long we had hot weather and heavy rainfall. There is no shortage of violent storms, including those with hail. Recent weeks have not brought much improvement in this respect. These weather conditions - high temperatures and high humidity - are conducive to a high level of fungal diseases. Pest infestations are also high. A huge problem in the fields is cabbage leaf miner.
On the other hand, we have a very lukewarm, sluggish trade in this vegetable. The demand side of the market remains passive. Large wholesalers are limiting the size of the lots they buy to avoid stockpiling. Adding to the ego is the uncertainty about the future, with the government threatening lockdown in the autumn.
Nevertheless, the price situation in the wholesale white cabbage trade is slightly better than a year ago. At present, wholesale prices for cabbage for the fresh market are most often 0.40-0.50 PLN per kilo, or an average of 0.45 PLN per kilo. A year ago it was 0.38 PLN per kilo. This is due to the fact that this year there is noticeably less cabbage than last year. This is confirmed by CSO data. A year ago around 800,000 tonnes of this vegetable were harvested, and forecasts for this year put the figure at 700,000 tonnes.
