Weather is not favorable for cucumber market in Poland

2021-04-21 11:06
The domestic greenhouse cucumber market in Poland  is experiencing a crisis of current supply. The weather is to blame. It has been cold or even very cold and cloudy for a long time. Vegetation in greenhouses has slowed down considerably and the market is consequently short of cucumbers.

And this despite the fact that demand is not at all exceptionally high. The destructive effect of lockdown on demand is also evident in this segment of the fresh vegetable market. And yet we now have a gap in the supply of cucumbers. This is exacerbated by the fact that wholesale importers have already completed the season for importing these vegetables.

This situation has of course been reflected in the wholesale prices of greenhouse cucumbers. The downward trend typical of the longer term in this phase of the season was first halted and then reversed and prices are now at record high levels. Large wholesaler sales are most often 6.00-7.00 PLN/kg (more than three times as expensive as a year ago). The graph above shows that such a high price around 20 April has not been seen for at least ten years.
