White cabbage in Poland - new season has slipped

Sellers of white cabbage from the 2020 harvest have been given an extra chance to get rid of stocks of this vegetable. With the cold and rainy weather, the season of young domestic cabbage has slipped and the game is left to "old" cabbage and young imported cabbage, which still has quite high prices.

As a result, prices for last year's white cabbage have managed to strengthen somewhat. At the large wholesaler level they are at 0.75-1.10 zlotys per kilo (although there are also asking prices at 1.30 zlotys per kilo). This is 9 per cent higher than a week ago and marks a departure from the price hole in which cabbage found itself at the end of March. It is also 9 per cent more year-on-year. At that time the prices of this vegetable in the big wholesale were already in a downward trend.

Such a trend is inevitable this year as well, but for now the weather has effectively stopped it. The market has to wait for domestic baby cabbage, for which demand is already very high. Imports are not meeting demand, because there is not much cabbage in Italy or Macedonia, and prices, although they have fallen, remain relatively high. In importers' offers, cabbage from Macedonia is priced at 3.50-4.00 zlotys per head. In small wholesalers even up to 5 PLN/unit.
