Lemons trade on the Polish market - update

2021-11-05 10:30
Global demand for lemons was very high in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic is still ongoing, but people are no longer reacting as panicked as they were last year. And this translates into demand behaviour. Demand for citrus is consequently lower than a year ago. The citrus harvest is also looking better, even though, in Europe, producers in the main supplier country Spain have announced some harvest problems, especially for the later varieties.

In any case, the lower demand is important enough to have an impact on prices. Prices are currently stable, but are noticeably lower than a year ago. However, it is worth recalling that a year ago, it was at the beginning of November that a downward trend in lemon prices began on the back of growing supply from Spain.

At that time, the average price in the Polish large wholesalers fell from 6.50 PLN per kg to 4.50 PLN per kg (between 3 and 16 November 2020). This year, we had a significant drop in lemon prices already in September, which brought the average price in the large wholesalers down from 6.25 PLN/kg to 3.75 PLN/kg. The price has stabilised at the latter level and has remained there until now. Lemon prices are most often at 3.00-4.50 PLN/kg in the large wholesalers. These prices are lower than those at the end of November in the last nine years, as can be seen in the graph below.
